DESCRIPTION:Teachers are invited to Warren James Winery on Monday\, July 22nd to “Taco ‘Bout Agriculture” and learn about the many conservation and agriculture resources available for your classrooms. The morning will start with lessons from Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom\, followed by a salsa making lesson led by a local farm-her\, and we will end the day touring a local agriculture business! \nVisit https://coles-ag-institute.cheddarup.com to register for the event. $10 registration fee includes light breakfast\, lunch\, and materials. Final agenda will be sent in early July\, but the day will tentatively run from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. Celebrate the efforts of the Urban Butterfly Initiative (Coles County SWCD’s 2022 Conservationist of the Year!) to increase biodiversity. Get advice for your own gardens\, lawns\, and pollinator plots. Bring the kids to see native creatures up close and participate in fun activities! All at beautiful Lake Charleston! \nExhibitors and participants will include the Coles County SWCD\, Urban Butterfly Initiative\, Grand Prairie Friends\, Douglas Hart Nature Center\, Fox Ridge Foundation\, Charleston Birders\, IDNR Fisheries\, Charleston Tree Commission\, Master Naturalists\, Master Gardeners\, Pheasants Forever\, Charleston Parks and Rec\, Coles County Arts Council\, Charleston Carnegie Library\, Charleston CAN Play\, Charleston Scouting America\, University of Illinois Extension Coles County\, and more. \nAugust 3rd is also the second to last day of the Urban Butterfly Initiative’s annual “Butterfly Blitz.” Participants in the Blitz can stop by the UBI table at the Festival and receive a special patch! SUMMARY:Polecat Creek Watershed Streambank Erosion Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Landowners in the Polecat Creek Watershed are invited to join us for lunch at The Seed Shed on January 21st to hear the results of streambank erosion and phosphorus loss research that has been conducted in the watershed by researchers from the University of Illinois Soils Lab! Assistant Professor Andrew Margenot\, Research Scientist Shengnan Zhou\, and Research Technicians Robert Yanes and Jorge Serrano will present information about the data collected via several “erosion pins” that were placed along the creek back in 2021.\nThe Embarras River was identified as a phosphorus priority watershed in the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy. This means that it is one of the state’s most critical watersheds in terms of phosphorus losses. Polecat Creek is a tributary of the Embarras River.\n\nThis event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
